Cars vs. Birds - 10 Feb 2013

The cars don't always win!

This morning I arrived at Kensington Metropark a little early for Wayne Pope's Winter Photography Workshop, so I decided to drive up to the Nature Center to see if there were any birds about.  When I reached the parking lot a flock of six Wild Turkeys were foraging near the parked cars.  Three were hens, and three were toms.

I rolled down the window and took a few photos of the birds as they moved away from the grass and toward the cars.  One car in particular suddenly became an object of interest: a freshly car-washed, black Lincoln Mark IV.

As the birds moved near the car the toms saw their reflection in the car's finish, and that was all she wrote.  The males began to display, and strut in front of their reflections.  Agitation then set in, and within moments the turkeys were attacking the car.  Not only were they gobbling, but throwing themselves at the car, even scratching with their hind claws.  The poor car didn't stand a chance, and within seconds I could see smudges on the side doors, and scratch marks.  Ouch!

"You lookin' at me?"

"Oh no, he didn't!"

"You want a piece of me?"

"Kick his ass, Tom!"

"Say hello to my little friend!"

"I got your back, dude."

"Who's your bitch, now?"
A number of other spectators were standing and watching in awe as the three male birds took turns beating on the car.  The hens were a bit farther off discussing tea, and rolling their eyes...
