Detroit River Waterfowl - 03 Jan 2013

Clear skies and temps in the single digits prompted a late afternoon run down to John Dingell Park in Ecorse, MI.  I only had about 20 minutes but put the scope and camera on the flocks of Canvasback, Mute Swans, and Redhead and made a quick video sweep from Mud Island south about a ½ mile.  I then did a frame-by-frame count for an e-bird submission.

None of the ducks were really close enough for DSLR photos, except this obliging pair of Mallard floating just a few feet from shore.  The rest were digiscoping distance.  Shimmer was a bit of a problem, though, so not too many keepers.

Protocol: Stationary
Comments:     Counts based on video taken and spp. ID'd frame-by-frame. Clear, cold, heavy ice flows around Mud Island. Did not count birds on north side of Mud Island. Counted only those birds between Dingell Pk and Mud Island to the south about ½ mile.
