Pt. Mouillee SGA - 09 May 2018

I took a rare, mid-day ride at Pt. Mouillee to look for shorebirds. Skies were clear, and a steady breeze was blowing from the NE. This would mean a tough ride out, but an easier ride back. Fresh gravel on the Middle Causeway would also mean a tough ride. So be it.

The shorebird habitat just adjacent to the Pump House was fairly quiet, but a flock of 43 Short-billed Dowitchers was a nice find. Dunlin were the only other shorebird about.  The larger shorebird habitat a quarter mile south in the Bad Creek Unit was more active with 1 Black-bellied Plover and ~950 Dunlin. I stopped long enough to digiscope a Tree Swallow atop a very neat perch.

The Middle Causeway and Banana Unit were relatively quiet with usual suspects. Forster's Terns provided a bit of a photographic opportunity, while a dozen American White Pelicans in the Vermet Unit was a nice find.

A group of three Sandhill Cranes flew by the Long Pond Unit as I returned to the car.  Eleven miles was a good bike trip.
